Carbon Engineering Direct Air Capture Explainer Video
Carbon Engineering is a Canadian clean energy company leading the commercialization of Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology—a process that captures carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere so it can be stored permanently underground. With the global urgency to reach net zero emissions by 2050, they needed a way to explain how their industrial solution fits into the broader climate strategy alongside renewables and reforestation.
They approached us to create an animated explainer video that would simplify the science behind DAC. They needed to clearly distinguish their technology from traditional carbon offsets and demonstrate to businesses and governments why reserving carbon removal capacity now is a critical step for the planet's future.
Our solutions
We developed a visual narrative that moves logically from the global problem to the specific solution. To explain the potentially confusing difference between avoided emissions (offsets) and negative emissions (removal), we created simple, animated equations and distinct iconography. This helped viewers instantly grasp the mathematical necessity of physically removing carbon from the air to balance the budget.
Our design approach featured a clean, modern vector aesthetic to make industrial infrastructure look approachable and futuristic. We also used relatable comparisons—such as equating one DAC facility to the work of 40 million trees—to provide a sense of scale. Further, by visualizing the invisible flow of CO2 using colour-coded vapors and arrows, we made the invisible chemistry of carbon capture visible and easy to follow.
The payoff
The resulting video is a moving tribute that bridges the past and present. It effectively educates viewers on the tragic decline of the buffalo while powerfully emphasizing that the Métis spirit remains unbroken.
By connecting the historical resilience of the buffalo hunters to the strength of modern Métis families and communities, the video serves as an enduring cultural touchstone, reminding us all that the Métis values of adaptability, resilience, and self-determination continue to thrive.
